Discover our Unrefined Andiroba Oil

Andiroba oil is a natural oil extracted from the seeds of the Andiroba tree (Carapa guianensis), a species native to the Amazon rainforest, particularly in Brazil, and other parts of Central and South America. The tree belongs to the Meliaceae family, which also includes mahogany and cedar. The oil is typically obtained through cold-pressing the seeds, a process that preserves its nutrient content, resulting in a rich, viscous liquid with a light yellowish to medium brown color and a mild, earthy, or slightly nutty aroma.

This oil has been used for centuries by indigenous communities in the Amazon for its therapeutic properties. It is known for being packed with essential fatty acids, such as oleic, palmitic, and linoleic acids, as well as bioactive compounds like limonoids and triterpenes. These components contribute to its reputation as a versatile remedy and cosmetic ingredient.

Key Properties and Uses:

- Anti-Inflammatory: Andiroba oil contains limonoids, which are believed to help reduce inflammation, making it popular for soothing muscle aches, joint pain, and skin irritations.
- Moisturizing: Its emollient nature hydrates and softens skin and hair, often used in lotions, creams, and hair conditioners to combat dryness.
- Healing: Traditionally applied to cuts, wounds, and skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, it’s thought to promote skin regeneration and improve barrier function.
- Insect Repellent: The oil’s natural compounds, including limonoids, repel mosquitoes and other insects, a use rooted in Amazonian practices where it’s burned in lamps or applied directly to the skin.
- Hair Care: It nourishes the scalp, strengthens hair, and adds shine, particularly benefiting dry or curly hair types.
- Antioxidant: Rich in vitamins (like A, C, and E) and antioxidants, it may help protect against environmental damage and signs of aging by supporting collagen production and fighting free radicals.
- Sustainability: Harvesting supports Amazonian communities, often done without chemicals, preserving both the oil’s purity and the forest ecosystem.

Suggested use levels for Andiroba Oil: natural insect repellents: 5 – 10 %, balms: 5 – 10%, lotions & creams: 3 – 10%, and hair conditioners: 2 – 5%.
